The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has successfully prosecuted four individuals for unlawfully cutting down trees in the Sharada area of the Municipal Local Government.
In an official statement released via the Ministry’s social media channels on Monday, the offenders—including one Jibril Adamu—were convicted after a legal trial.
According to the statement, the prosecution was led by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu under the provisions of the Kano State Forestry Law, which makes it illegal to fell trees without official permission. The case was adjudicated at Court 2 in Normansland by His Worship Auwalu Yusuf.
Following a review of the presented evidence, the court ruled the four accused guilty. Each was handed a three-month jail term, with an alternative option of paying a ₦40,000 fine. Additionally, they were ordered to pay ₦50,000 in restitution for the environmental damage caused by their actions.
Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, praised the verdict as a critical step in the fight against deforestation and environmental abuse in the state.
“Unlawful tree cutting not only undermines our afforestation programs but also threatens the environmental stability of our communities. This judgment demonstrates that Kano is serious about protecting its natural resources,” Dr. Hashim said.
The Ministry encouraged residents to be vigilant and report any instances of illegal logging or environmental violations through its official website.
