Former President John Mahama has stated that, majority of applicants for voter identity cards obtained through a guarantor mechanism.

“On Friday, I visited some registration centers in the Greater Accra Region, where I noticed hundreds of young people waiting in lines to be registered.” It was evident that a considerable number had been enrolled through the guarantor scheme.

“If, in the future, we must use the Ghana Card as the sole identifier for registration, then the National Identification Authority must step up its game so that millions of our citizens are not disenfranchised,” Mr. Mahama urged in a tweet on Saturday, March 16, 2023.

However, former President NDC’s 2024 contender John Mahama has once again asked the EC to review the decision to limit the existing limited Voter Registration process to district offices.

According to him, the exercise has been marred by difficulties, making it extremely difficult for potential voters, particularly young people, to participate.

He made the appeal during a tour of the Electoral Commission (EC) Greater Accra Headquarters on Friday, September 15, 2023, which acts as a headquarters for five constituencies.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer claimed that the EC had no excuse to continue to treat the registrants so poorly.

He also requested the EC to seek additional funding if financial limitations were to blame for the decision.
